Travelling to Heidelberg

The nearest airports to Heidelberg are located in Stuttgart, Cologne-Bonn and Frankfurt with Frankfurt International being the closest and perhaps most convenient to travel to.

There are trains that run from Frankfurt International to Heidelberg Central Railway Station (Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof) either directly or with a change in the city of Mannheim. A return ticket costs about 52 Euros. The duration of the travel, depending on the route, is close to an 1 hour. For train tickets and timetables, please visit the website of the Deutsche Bahn. Train tickets can of course be also bought at Frankfurt International at the counters of the Deutsche Bahn or at self-service ticket machines.

If you are travelling in a group, it may be worth considering booking a shuttle service that will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to your accommodation. We recommend using TLS. A shuttle service can of course be also arranged for your departure. Local transport information for Heidelberg and its surroundings, can be obtain on the website of the local transport authority RNV

Please note that Uber services are currently not available in Germany.
However, other services are available, e.g. mytaxi or call a taxi by phone  (+49 6221 302030).

As a general note, emergency services can be reached by dialling 112.

How to reach HITS while in Heidelberg

All talks will take place in Studio Villa Bosch which shares the same location as HITS.  We kindly ask attendees to arrange their own transportation to the venue.

Taxi

Centrally located taxi ranks can be found at Bismarckplatz and at the University Square (Universitätsplatz) in the old town. For returning to Heidelberg, taxis will be organised by the conference at the end of the day.

The price of a taxi from the aforementioned locations (and in general from the old town area) is about 12-16 Euro. Typically,  a taxi transports up to four passengers.

Local Transport and Hike

For the attendees that don't shun walking, HITS can be also reached on foot. There are two main paths that one needs to negotiate. Local transport information can be obtained from the website of the local transport authority RNV.  Note that bus service 30 (aka "Science Bus") does not have the necessary capacity to transport attendees to the conference venue and is thus not recommended.

Starting from Altstadt Railway Station (Altstadt Bahnhof): You can reach Altstadt Station via the S-Bahn regional trains S1, S2, S5, and S51 that run regularly from Heidelberg Central Railway Station (Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof). Alternatively, there are the regular bus services 33 and 35 that start from Bismarckplatz and will directly take you to Alstadt Station. If you are accommodated in the old town, then you can easily reach Alstadt also on foot.

Starting from Alstadt Market Square via Castle: starting from Market Square (Marktplatz), this route takes you first up to Heidelberg Castle (Schloß). Though longer, this is a more pleasant and scenic route that will provide you with a nice view of the city of Heidelberg on the way to the conference.
